About Us Flight Training Theory Aircraft Contact Us

To begin your new pastime or career as a Helicopter Pilot it is as easy as taking one of our obligation free Trial Introductory Flights. During the 30-minute flight with an Instructor, you will be at the controls of a Robinson R22 Helicopter. Before your flight your Instructor will brief you on what to expect and what controls you are able to use during flight. Upon completion of your flight, you will have a better understanding of helicopters as well as experience the thrill of vertical flight. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions about your experience. We want this to be memorable, whether the outcome is going to be a licence or not!
Our school uses the Robinson R22 for the majority of its training. Endorsements in other aircraft type may be arranged. You may use your own aircraft at a discounted rate.

You are not expected to understand everything on your first flight. On every flight you undertake you will be given a briefing by the Instructor as to what to expect and what is going to be covered in that lesson. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions at any time. We would prefer you ask as many questions as possible, and remember, safety is our first priority. Over the next few lessons you will learn how to inspect the aircraft before flight, refuelling, obtaining weather etc.

At the end of every flight, you will have a de-brief with your Instructor. An instructional sheet will be completed by the Instructor stating what was covered in the lesson and how you performed. It should then be signed by both you and the Instructor, and filed in your Student File. Your Log Book is your responsibility to keep updated after every flight.

Your flight test entails reviewing everything you have learnt prior to getting you to the Testing stage. You will be given a designated route the day before your test, you must do a pre-flight, lodge a flight plan and await your Testing Officer. The flight test will be conducted by a CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) Flight Operations Instructor or a delegate (Authorised Training Officer).
Upon passing your Flight Test you will have your log book certified by your Testing Officer, who will review your levels of attainment in both the theory and practical aspects of your course. If the Testing Officer is satisfied you have achieved a satisfactory level, he will provide a report for submission to the Licence Issuing Authority, CASA.

There are two main options - Private Helicopter Licence (PPL-H) or Commercial Helicopter Licence (CPL-H).

This licence allows you to fly solo in the local training area under supervision. Your licence will be issued by CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) or a delegate approved under CAR 5.09 ie. Chief Flying Instructor or Authorised Training Officer. You will be required to complete the necessary form prior to receiving licence. See your Instructor for the form. You must have completed a Class 2 Medical before receiving your Student Pilot's Licence.

This licence enables you to fly privately in a helicopter for which you are licensed. A private licence holder cannot be paid as a pilot.

To obtain this licence you must be at least 17 years old, have a pass in the required theory and flight test, complete the required flight training syllabus (a minimum of 50 hours) and hold a valid Class 2 Medical certificate.

If you wish to be a professional pilot this is the one for you.

This licence enables you to fly commercially in a helicopter for which you are licensed. Hence you may be paid as a commercial pilot if employed or operating under an Air Operators Certificate.

To obtain this licence you must be at least 18 years old, have a pass in the required theory and flight test, complete the required flight-training syllabus and hold a valid Class 1 Medical certificate. The flight-training syllabus requires a minimum of 125 hours. This may be reduced to 105 hours if the last 30 hours are completed in 3 consecutive months.

Exemptions to the minimum hours are available if you already hold aeroplane or helicopter licences, either an overseas or an Australian licence. Our staff can assist you with information on this exemption.

Cairns Helicopter School conducts ab-initio (beginner) flight training in our modern Robinson R22 helicopter.

Turbine Helicopter Endorsements, Sling Operations, Low Level and Mustering Flying training are some of the advanced flight training we can offer, special arrangements may be necessary.

Conducted by special arrangement and conditions apply.

This course teaches you to safely fly a helicopter at low level in accordance with the Visual Flight Rules (VFR). This course entails a minimum of 5 hours of flight training.

This course teaches you how to safely fly and operate a turbine engine helicopter such as the Bell 206. The hours required are a minimum of 5 hours (if no turbine experience held).

Firstly you must be endorsed on the machine type that is used in the training. This course teaches you how to safely conduct operations whilst lifting external loads (sling loads). Hours required are "to the required standard" but usually 5 hours depending on the pilots' skill level and hours flown on the type of helicopter.

This review is conducted as required and it is suggested that you book early.

This endorsement is required by those pilots wishing to muster cattle in the Australian Outback. The endorsement is very demanding, and will require a minimum of 10 hours. However the final amount of time spent in training will be determined by our highly skilled and knowledgeable Heli-Mustering Instructor, as this endorsement is the most critical due to the type of low level flying required.

To obtain a conversion licence you must have a pass in the required theory and flight test, complete the required flight-training syllabus and hold a valid Class 1 Medical certificate.
The flight-training syllabus requires a minimum of 80 hours. This may be reduced to 70 hours if the last 30 hours are completed in 3 consecutive months.
